The Mass Communication Department at North Greenville University seeks to provide quality higher education programs in broadcast media, media ministry, and print media within the context of Christian philosophy and values. High academic standards, practical skills, and strong ethical values are emphasized.

Students who earn a degree from the Mass Communication Department should be able to demonstrate:

• Excellence in knowledge and skills that will meet the demands of graduate schools or the professional world;
• A broad knowledge and understanding of current events;
• The ability to think clearly and analytically;
• The accurate use of the English language;
• Effective cognition of mass communication’s history, its role in America and the world today;
• Positive attitudes toward work; and
• Strong spiritual, moral and ethical values with a commitment to uphold such values in the world of professional communication.

This course of study within a liberal arts curriculum is designed to lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree in three majors:

• Broadcast Media
• Print Media
• Media Ministry

Practical experience is provided through the department’s student-operated radio station, video productions, TV station, newspaper (print and online), and yearbook.

Successful completion of MCOM 4390 (Mass Media Internship) is required for all Mass Communication students.

All courses in the respective Mass Communication major sequence, those with a BRDC, COMM, JOUR, MCOM designation must be completed with a “C” or better.

A Mass Communication writing/grammar test must be passed with an 80% or better in order to advance from the lower level core courses. This test will be administered in two of the lower level core courses. If a student does not pass either of the two opportunities remedial tutoring or other assistance will be recommended.

The Foreign Language requirements must be fulfilled with four semesters of the same language as offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics.

The natural science requirement must consist of one Physical Science and one Biological Science.

A minimum of 128 credit hours is required for a Mass Communication degree.
